MOD publishing services
Helping the Ministry of Defence with the creation, distribution and management of information.
Like any large organisation, the effective sharing of information is critical to efficiency. I was asked to join a team evaluating how information was created and shared internally at the Ministry of Defence, to identify where improvements could be made.
We ran a discovery, which involved research with people who worked in publishing across many Ministry of Defence departments, to understand their workflows and challenges. We mapped out the landscape of platforms and systems currently in use, and identified areas that would benefit from further interventions, to try new ways of working.
Alongside this work, we ran large-scale surveys with MOD staff, to understand how information is found, consumed and acted upon. We audited the information architecture of existing intranets, and ran tree tests to create baseline metrics against which we could test improvements. We also ran co-design sessions with staff to create a new information architecture, as well as content strategy workshops with publishers and stakeholders to bring consistency to the different types of information being created.
We designed a pilot service to demonstrate new ways of creating content, which would include new tools, training, governance methods and ways to distribute.
